Student-at-Law

Background

Law is Liz’s second career. She served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 17 years in both an operational and administrative capacity. Liz credits her military experience for showing her how to use policy and the law to problem-solve and resolve tensions between the government institution and individual rights and needs. In 2018 she retired at the rank of Major. Prior to law school, Liz worked as a civilian for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine. In this role, she used her team-building skills to develop Mission-level plans to observe and report on the situation in Ukraine and support the Monitoring Teams deployed across the country.

Liz thoroughly enjoyed her law school experience. She was a Writing Fellow during her third year, where she assisted the Legal Research and Writing instructor by leading learning group activities, grading assignments, and mentoring her group of 15 students. She was honoured to write for ReconciliACTION YEG, a student-run blog about Indigenous issues, current events, and the law.  She and her moot partner won the Alberta Court of Appeal Criminal Law Moot competition. She also interned with the Office of the Judge Advocate General. As a summer student Liz worked for the Centre for Constitutional Studies where she wrote public education articles about current constitutional topics, updated the website’s reference material, and co-produced a podcast series with her fellow students on the Duty to Consult doctrine. This breadth of experience introduced Liz to different aspects of government authority and helped hone her written and oral advocacy skills.

Away from the office

Liz still enjoys following current events and conflict analysis from around the world, even though her feet are firmly planted in Edmonton. She is often found exploring Edmonton’s river valley and surrounding parkland with her dog. In the summer months she loves gardening, which lets her catch up on her podcast listening.
