Background

Leah completed her LLB Bachelor of Law at The University of Leicester in Leicester, England in 2016. Leah also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Honours Political Science from the Western University in London, Ontario.  During her Masters in Law and law degree Leah worked for two pro bono organisations in England as an intern and caseworker.

During law school, Ms. Macklin spent her summer working at Royal & Co., a criminal law firm in Edmonton. She assisted the partners and associates with drafting and submitting court applications. She performed extensive legal research and completed numerous briefs for upcoming trials. She also attended the hearing with the partners and would attend court as a representative of the lawyers to adjourn matters.

During law school, Ms. Macklin interned with a pro bono organization in Leicester called the Shelter Housing and Research Project. She worked closely with clients to determine their housing rights and with the local council to guarantee these rights were being protected. She advised clients on landlord/ tenant problems and homelessness. She conducted extensive research and drafted applications and letters. She was also involved in the Canadian Law Association at the University of Leicester, attending meetings and speakers regarding Canadian law topics.

While undertaking her Masters in Law, Ms. Macklin interned as a caseworker at The Bar Pro Bono unit in London. This organization attempted to fill the gap created by a decrease in legal aid funding to cases regarding family, immigration and estate law. She analyzed the applications sent to the Unit and worked with the senior caseworkers to research precedents and contact Barristers to take the cases pro bono.
