Samuel Becker

Student-at-Law

Practice Description

Though he completed his education on the west coast, Sam was born and raised in Edmonton. Prior to articling with Shores Jardine, Sam worked in compliance and policy analysis positions with the government of British Columbia. In addition to gaining a greater understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of government regulation, he also had the opportunity to experience effecting change on a systemic scale.

While at law school, Sam volunteered with Access Pro Bono, where he created materials for various local organizations providing accessible information on navigating residential tenancy disputes and musicians’ rights over their own work.

In his third year, Sam spent a semester in the University of Victoria’s Law Centre clinic, where he worked as a temporary student-at-law to provide legal advice, assistance and representation in civil and criminal matters to marginalized individuals in civil and criminal matters that did not qualify them for legal aid. While he appeared in Provincial Court for criminal remand, applications, sentencings and assisted with trials, Sam’s finest moment was when he reunited a client with her beloved dog without even having to file a statement of claim.

Sam’s experiences with public service impressed on him indelibly. He values cooperation and pragmatism and finds deep meaning in being a part of something bigger than himself. He looks forward to putting these principles to work and seeing how they will grow in his legal career.

Sam believes that interesting people start as interested people and considers learning to be his favourite hobby. He plays guitar to relax, but usually needs to wash paint or rock-climbing chalk off his hands first. Special care is taken to ensure that no daily crossword is missed, but he superstitiously won’t tell you how long his current streak is. Sam enjoys writing creative essays and short fiction, and he might even finish that novel one day.
